Private Composition Lessons
I started teaching when I was sixteen years old. By now I have an extensive experience in teaching lessons in composition, orchestration, analysis, piano, and chamber music coaching. I offer composition lessons to various level of students, from highly professional to the very beginners.
Every composition lesson includes:
1. Analysis.
We will analyze classical and contemporary works based on the current piece you are writing. For example, if you are writing for flute solo we will explore variety of music, from Telemann Fantasias to compositions by Debussy, Bozza, and modern masters. We will look at the specifics of writing for flute, analyze the structure and elements of the pieces. This knowledge is extremely helpful while writing your own music.
2. Conversation about your own composition
Whether it's a complex 30-minute concerto or two bars of your new work you will receive thorough feedback on your piece. In the larger piece we will cover the structure, elements, their development, inner flow, orchestration. In a simple sketch we will talk what can be done with those basic elements, how we can develop it, what is our goal.
Additionally, you will be taught about the notation of your music. It is very important to have slurs and all expressive elements in your score right at the beginning. This skill will help you organize your own musical thinning and make your music look professional right away.
3. Recommendations
You will be given tasks of listening to certain works and working on your own compositions. Tasks are given in a detailed manner. A typical task for an advanced student who is writing for example for flute and piano might look like this:
a). listen to three flute sonatas (Mozart, Poulenc, Lieberman). Compare styles. Compare their presentation of flute, collaboration between flute and piano. How do they use registers? What are the elements that we remember right away? What is the presentation of the virtuosic elements? Of the melodic elements? Which sonata spoke to you the most and why?
b). After listening look at the music, you have already written. Maybe you would want to change something?
Write another 8 bars of your Flute duo. Make sure piano uses variety of the registers and does not double flute all the time. Make sure they have a "conversation" exchanges their elements. Don't forget to use dynamic and expressive details
4. Performance
Ideally the music you have written should be performed! I support my students in finding opportunities for them whenever possible. The thrilling experience of having your music performed is a part of this profession!I either ask my friends-professional musicians to perform, or we look for other opportunities on the student's side.
